Android source code which can be downloaded from 2. Kernel for the phone which is a bridge between the hardware and software for the phone 3. Software to customize the above two So here're the advantages of installing custom ROMs over the inbuilt (Stock) ROMs: 1. They bring better performance 2. They behave close to stock android 3. They can easily be rooted and customized 4. They have suttle added functionalities 5. There's no bloatware Cyanogenmod was first released in June 2009 and they became really popular after the release of CyanogenMod 7 based on Android Ginger bread CyanogenMod created a super easy process which is automated and avoids all complex steps due to which the userbase was around 50,000,000 in 2015. Cyanogen, which was till 2013 non profitable organization, formed Cyanogen Inc and partnered with manufacturers to bring CyanogenMod as the stock OS. By December 2016, after the release of CyanogenMod , the company went for a major restructuring and shut down the infrastructure behind CyanogenMod ROM. The CEO Steve Kondik was fired. 1. What this means to Cyanogen Inc? They will now put efforts to build a new program called Cyanogen modular OS program 2. What this means to the CyanogenMod OS? The source code of CyanogenMod is forked and rebranded as LineageOS as the word "Cyanogen" is a copyright content for the company 3. What this means to other developers and other ROMs? Literally nothing. LineageOS is already out and is nothing different from CyanogenMod. 4. What it means to the users? If you have CyanogenMod installed in your phone, there'll be no updates. So better install LineageOS. Others can also try LineageOS as it gives a smooth Nougat feel. How to install LineageOS (Android )? What are the steps involved? Step 0. Download required files (OS and GAPPS mentioned above) Step 1. Backup apps: Go to this link to know how to do this: Step 2. Check if bootloader is unlocked Step 3. Unlock the bootloader if it's not unlocked Step 4. Install custom recovery Step 5. Root your phone Go to this link to do step 2 to step 5: Step 6: Wipe Cache and factory reset Step 7: Install OS Step 8: Install GAPPS This video will help you in doing Steps 6 to 8. These steps are the same not just for LineageOS, but for any other ROM. While downloading LineageOS from the official website, search XDA forum and download unofficial ROM. DISCLAIMER: For some phones, you cannot even find unofficial ROM of LinageOS (Android Nougat ) in the internet due to the fact that developers haven't made one or the processor doesn't support it. If that is the case, then you can't install LineageOS. Also if you install unofficial ROM, you'll experience a lot of forced closes here and there.
